What are algebraic expressions, and is my 6th grader ready?

An algebraic expression uses a letter to stand for an unknown number (like x + 5). Most 6th graders are introduced to this gradually, building on the patterns and equations work from earlier grades.

My child's program stops at 6th grade. What comes next?

Look at programs built for middle school and pre-algebra, and use their placement test rather than assuming your child needs to start at the very beginning of a new sequence.

Is 6th grade math harder than 5th grade?

It's more abstract: ratios, negative numbers and expressions are a step up from arithmetic with whole numbers and fractions. Kids who were solid in 5th grade fractions usually adjust well.
