Tips for placement

• Give any test in a calm, low-pressure setting, and don't help.
• If your child is between two levels, the lower one usually goes better.
• For writing, a short sample your child writes on their own tells you more than a grade level.

Questions parents ask

Do language arts programs have placement tests?

Many do, especially grammar and spelling programs. Writing programs more often place by grade and a short writing sample; the notes above say how each one recommends starting.

What if my child places below their grade level?

That's common when switching programs, and it isn't a sign of a problem. Starting where your child is secure builds confidence and usually means moving through the first levels quickly.

Should a strong reader start at a higher level?

Not always. Reading well and writing or spelling well are different skills. Place each part (grammar, writing, spelling) on its own if the program lets you.
