Reviewers and parents consistently call Barton the strongest home-based option for a child with dyslexia, with training DVDs and full scripting so no teaching background is needed. The cost per level is real money, and several reviews describe the drilling as repetitive and not especially fun, even while calling it effective.
Parents especially value Nessy for kids who've soured on reading instruction elsewhere: the Loch Ness Monster theme and game-based practice make children ask to play it, which is rare for a structured literacy program. It was developed at a dyslexia center and includes a built-in screening tool, and many families use it alongside another core program rather than alone.
Neither is better for every child. Barton Reading & Spelling System is the stronger fit for multisensory (orton-gillingham); mostly offline; plenty. Nessy Reading and Spelling is the stronger fit for no; online; minimal.
